Synopsis
This work "reviews the options available today for infertile couples who
want to become parents. . . . {The author} identifies the problems and the
advantages of the alternatives available; these range from adoption, a choice
which has been used for over 4,000 years, to new reproductive technologies. The
last half of the book is devoted to a . . . discussion of the psychological,
legal, and ethical issues surrounding surrogate motherhood." (Readings)

From the Critics
From Ronald K. McCraw - Science Books & Films
Both sides of the surrogacy issue are well presented, although the
authorconcludes with a recommendation that surrogacy is not 'the answer' at
presentand may not be in the future. In fact, the author paints a rather dismal
picture of all of the options available to infertile couples. She explains this
was done to provide a 'realistic perspective.' Based on her arguments, the
mental health professional might well convince the childless couple that all of
the options to obtain a child are filled with too little hope for success and
too much financial, physical, and emotional cost. Schwartz, however, does
notsuggest how the counsellor can then help the couple deal with their sense of
loss and emptiness as they face their infertility.
From Gloria L. Steiner - Readings
This little book is a gem. . . . {It} will be of immense value to coupleswho are
involuntarily childless and are seeking parenthood, as well as to those mental
health clinicians with whom these couples share their pain and theirjoys as they
confront their choices.
